DENVER – On paper, it doesn't get much better.
MSU Denver rolled past Westminster on Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball, hitting a season-high .365 while holding the Griffins to an opponent season-low .000.
The Roadrunners won 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-17) to improve to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in the RMAC.
"We had really good opportunities at all three positions along the net," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "When we were able to ball control well, we could run a pretty effective offense that gave us a lot of holes in the block and allowed us to score. Defensively we did a pretty good job of adjusting to a different style of arm."
Kayla White had 10 kills on .471 hitting,
Alyssa Kelling had her 12
th straight match of hitting .308 or better by hitting .429 with seven kills, and
Alexis Benda had six kills on .455 hitting. MSU Denver hit only .226 in the first set, then hit .444 the rest of the way.
"Our intent was good," White said. "We got balls to the target, which allowed our setters to get a good ball to us. And we had a lot of room up there, so being smart with our shots and putting the ball in good places was the key."
MSU Denver built a block advantage of 10 to 2.5, and also had 10 service aces to the Griffins' one.
Jessa Megenhardt dished out 22 assists and the RMAC leader in service aces added three more of those as the Roadrunners dispatched the last-place Griffins (3-16, 0-11).
"It was focus tonight," Megenhardt said. "With this kind of team, you just have to come out super-focused and on fire.
"(On offense) it was a lot about getting our middles involved and trying some new things, too."
The victory completed a two-win weekend for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver is technically in second place in the RMAC, but Regis is 10-1 and the Roadrunners are 9-1 – and MSU Denver won the first of two head-to-head matchups between the teams.
MSU Denver beat Dixie State on Friday in what was, at the time, a battle for second place.
"It was a little different match than last night," Glenn said. "Last night we were trying to slow it down, and tonight we were trying to speed it up. Two different styles of teams, and it took us a little while to adjust."
After Dixie State's Friday loss, the teams tied for third place in the RMAC have three losses, and the Roadrunners have tiebreaker advantages over two of them and have yet to play the third.
In other words, the RMAC regular-season race looks like it's coming down to the Roadrunners and Regis. MSU Denver goes on the road for its next four matches before playing at home again on Nov. 5 – against Regis in a non-conference match. But there are four road matches to worry about first.
"We're going to try to make those gyms ours," Megenhardt said. "We're going to come out feisty, stay focused and outwork those teams."
