COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's soccer team fell to No. 1 UCCS on the road Saturday evening by a 6-1 score.
Despite surrendering two early goals, MSU Denver (6-8-2, 5-4-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) was in striking distance at halftime down 2-0. The Roadrunners held UCCS (15-0, 11-0 RMAC) scoreless for a stretch of 36 minutes and 39 seconds to end the opening period after the Mountain Lions scored twice in the first 8:21.
Unfortunately, UCCS struck again just six seconds into the second half to make a reasonable deficit into an insurmountable one. The home team sprinkled three more goals throughout the second half before MSU Denver freshman
Arantxa Melendez put the Roadrunners on the board with her third goal of the season. That 81
st-minute goal made the score 6-1, which would eventually be the final.
"The difference tonight was the work rate on and off the ball," MSU Denver coach
Tracy Chao said. "(UCCS was) decisive and assertive in everything that they did from defending to attacking and we were not."
The Roadrunners managed eight shots, putting two on frame. Melendez and
Gabriella Gamboa each took two shots to lead the team.
MSU Denver will return home for a match with crosstown rival Regis at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Senior Day will follow at 11 a.m. Sunday against Black Hills State.
