@MSUDenverVB: Roadrunners Sweep Mountaineers to Extend Win Streak to Seven

MSU Denver defeats scrappy Western Colorado team; holds third straight opponent to below .100 hitting

DENVER – The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team held its third consecutive opponent to a hitting percentage south of .100 on Saturday afternoon, completing Homecoming weekend with its seventh consecutive win overall and sixth straight victory to start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

MSU Denver (11-3, 6-0 and first place RMAC) carried momentum from a dominant Friday night sweep over Colorado Mesa into Saturday's match, jumping out to a 25-16 first-set victory to put Western Colorado (7-8, 3-4 and 10th place RMAC) in an early hole. Three of MSU Denver's first seven points came on blocks, continuing the ongoing narrative of great defense at the net that has played an integral part of MSU Denver's success this season.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and held the Mountaineers at an arm's length through the remainder of the set, eventually taking the frame by a 25-18 count.

Western Colorado didn't go down without a fight, however, making the third set the closest of the bunch. The Roadrunners held a slight edge for most of the set, but WCU took an 18-17 lead and threatened to extend the match another set.

MSU Denver responded with three consecutive points before the Mountaineers got one back, making the score 20-19 in favor of MSU Denver. The Roadrunners rattled off another three-point stretch when it mattered most, and the four-point deficit (23-19) was too much for Western Colorado to overcome as MSU Denver eventually took the frame 25-20.

While it was yet another sweep for the Roadrunners, who have put away their last three opponents in three sets apiece, it wasn't necessarily easy.

"I think we were a little slow to make adjustments," MSU Denver coach Jenny Glenn said. "Toward the end of the match (Western Colorado) started playing really feisty defense. We knew that was going to be something they would do – play scrappy defense – and they showed that at the end."

Glenn believes that what sets her team apart, though, is the will to win despite the feel of the match.

"Last week we had a similar match where we felt it wasn't our best match but we found a way to win, and that's what good teams do," she said. "It's a sign of maturity, quite honestly."

The Roadrunners limited Western Colorado to a hitting percentage of just .078 when all was said and done. Meanwhile, MSU Denver hit .239, just above its season average of .235 coming into the match.

Kayla White led the Roadrunners with 10 kills while Avaline Lai and Alexis Benda each chipped in nine. White added a team-leading 15 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.

The Roadrunners will go on a South Dakota swing next weekend, taking on Black Hills State at 7 p.m. Friday before a 3 p.m. match with South Dakota Mines on Saturday.
