GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines overcame five set points in the opening frame and the Orediggers managed to hold off MSU Denver for a 3-2 win Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball.
Mines (17-6 overall, 10-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had to earn its 28-26, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10 win on its Senior Night.
MSU Denver (17-5, 12-2) still maintains its hold on second place in the RMAC.
"Mines played well tonight and stayed more aggressive throughout the course of the match," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "We made uncharacteristic errors that made the match difficult for us."
Mines' win overshadowed a strong performance by Roadrunners outside hitter
Avaline Lai, who had 23 kills on .372 hitting while adding three blocks (two solo).
Rylee Hladky had a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs, and
Kayla White added 11 kills.
Ember Canty had five blocks.
Meanwhile, the setting duo of
Joli Sadler (28 assists, three aces) and
Jessa Megenhardt (20 assists, one ace) combined for 48 assists and four aces.
MSU Denver held Mines to .194 hitting, but hit only .181 as a team.
And Mines was able to hold its own in two of the Roadrunners' strongest areas, with a 10-8 advantage in blocks and a 6-5 edge in aces.
MSU Denver led 24-21 in the first set, but Mines rallied for a 24-24 tie, then also managed get points when trailing 25-24 and 26-25.
MSU Denver has a quick turnaround with a Tuesday non-conference home match with Regis scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Auraria Event Center.
"We will look to clean up some areas of our game and refocus for a busy week next week," Glenn said.
