@MSUDenverBSB: Adame’s Cycle Leads MSU Denver to 19-1 Win over Sioux Falls in Completion of Suspended Game

Senior catcher hits first cycle in MSU Denver baseball history; goes 4-4 with 4 runs, 8 RBIs

DENVER – Baseball games that start at noon on a Saturday don't typically end at 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday, but a 19-1 Metropolitan State University of Denver win over Sioux Falls followed exactly that timeline.

It was worth the wait.

Senior catcher Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo./Lamar) added a double and a triple on Sunday to his Saturday single and home run, ending with a monster 4-for-4, four-run, eight-RBI game to complete the first cycle in MSU Denver baseball history.

"It just doesn't happen very often in baseball," MSU Denver coach Ryan Strain said of Adame's cycle. "It couldn't have happened to a better kid. He's our hardest worker. He's a tough kid. He's a leader and I'm just really happy for him. That's the first time I've coached a kid that's hit for the cycle in my 14 years, so that was pretty neat."

Picking up in the top of the fourth inning where snow forced the game to be suspended on Saturday with MSU Denver leading 6-0, the Roadrunners (3-3) and Cougars (0-3) reconvened Sunday at 11 a.m. to finish the final game of the weekend series. The Red & Blue tacked on 13 more runs during Sunday's activity and totaled 23 hits in the game, finishing the contest just the way they started it.

Redshirt junior John Badgett (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) relieved fellow right-handed junior Branden Dehority (Chandler, Ariz./Mesquite), who went 3 2/3 strong on Saturday with just four hits allowed. It didn't take long for the fourth inning to end after it had been postponed for about 22 hours, as the Roadrunners caught Connor King stealing to promptly end the inning after the resumption of the game.

Junior Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch) stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and smoked the first pitch for a triple into the right field corner, and seniors Matt Malkin (Broomfield, Colo./Monarch) and Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) hit singles on the next two pitches consecutively to keep MSU Denver's Saturday momentum moving into Sunday.

"That was one of the concerns when you have a game and a layoff like that, that you've won two games and you're up 6-0 and you can be complacent," Strain said. "It was good Badgett came in and got out of that when we threw the guy out at second, and having Soole come up and rip the first pitch down the right-field line for a triple and then Malkin comes up with the next pitch and rips it into center, and then Kistaitis rips the next pitch, three pitches in a row, that kind of set the tone that we were ready to play again and we'd get after it."

After three pitches were turned around for three hits to start the bottom of the fourth, the floodgates opened.

Following a walk from junior Cade Peters (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's), Adame cashed in on a bases-loaded situation with the most elusive element of the cycle: the triple. The bases-clearing three-bagger made it 10-0 before junior Jacob Moyer (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) brought Adame home on a sacrifice fly.

Adame took advantage of ducks on the pond again in the sixth, doubling home Peters and Dylan Nelson (Morrison, Colo./D'Evelyn) after each had singled. The cycle was complete – the first in MSU Denver Baseball history. Though it took about 24 hours to complete, it only took six innings, which is no small feat.

"I knew I had to get that double after I hit that triple today," Adame said, "so (I thought) just stay on the ball and hit it to the right side. That's what I did, and it worked. Honestly, everyone was clicking and seeing the ball, hitting well."

MSU Denver wasn't done in the sixth, as Zach Walsh (Austin, Texas/Vista Ridge) pounded a three-run, pinch-hit homer to dead center to make it 16-1. A two-run single from Malkin a few batters later made it 18-1. Malkin ended the day(s) 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, and he's now hitting .500 on the season after going 8-for-14 with three homers, five runs scored and 11 RBIs in the three-game set against Sioux Falls.

"I told them the better you guys play, that gives our others guy opportunities to play," Strain said of his starters, "which is a big deal. They're our teammates, they work hard, and we wanted to get as many guys in as we could."

That was the story of the last few innings, as 22 Roadrunners either played the field or got an at-bat in the game. MSU Denver added its final run in the seventh, as senior Adam Tulley (Allenspark, Colo./Estes Park) scored on a double play.

Leadoff hitter Chase Anderson (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) was 3-for-5 with two runs in the game, while Cade Peters (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) was 2-for-5 with two runs and a double. Junior Jacob Moyer (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Walsh was 2-for-2 with his three-run dinger. Six MSU Denver pitchers threw at least one inning, striking out eight and walking just one Cougar.

"Pitchers did great the whole series," Adame said. "If we just continue to do that we'll be a great team. I think we're all meshing really well. I think a lot of it is just bringing in a lot of competitive people. It makes people compete for jobs. Everyone knows there's someone behind them that can play and take their spot. We all push each other."

After an 0-3 start to the season, MSU Denver outscored Sioux Falls 37-5 in the three-game sweep to even its record at 3-3. The Roadrunners look to continue their hot play next weekend at home against Lubbock Christian (Texas), as a four-game series with the Chaps is on tap.

Game one will be Friday at 1 p.m., while a doubleheader is set for noon Saturday at the Regency Athletic Complex. The final game of the four-game set will start at noon Sunday.
