COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – All good things come to an end.
The MSU Denver women's basketball team saw its season-best six-game winning streak snapped Friday night in an 84-69 loss at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
The Mountain Lions scored a season high in points while shooting 56.9 percent from the field, the best any Roadrunners opponent has shot from the field this season. And while the Roadrunners shot a decent 43.1 percent from the field, they connected on just 1 of 17 from 3-point range.
"Give them credit, they shot the ball well and they were the aggressor," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "They executed and they hit some shots on their home floor that didn't go in when we played them at our place. It was a case of them playing well and we just didn't play like we have been."
The win by UCCS jumbled the race for third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. MSU Denver, UCCS, Colorado School of Mines, Western State Colorado and Colorado State University-Pueblo are in a five-way tie for third at 10-6.
The Roadrunners (11-11 overall) hope to start another winning streak Saturday in another key road game at Colorado School of Mines (13-8).
"We can fix it by getting a win tomorrow," Haave said. "We've just got to get back to what we've been doing."
MSU Denver overcame a 16-point third quarter deficit in beating UCCS 60-56 two weeks ago at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners never led Friday, but this time their comeback efforts were rebuffed.
They trailed 16-6 in the first quarter, but had pulled within 22-20 with 6:51 left in the first half on a pair of
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East) free throws. UCCS (11-11) led 32-24 at the break.
But the Mountain Lions opened the second half with a 3 for an 11-point lead. Though MSU Denver got within five points at 37-32, and though Smith had 10 third-quarter points, UCCS still led 54-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Three times in the fourth quarter the Roadrunners got within six points, the last on a Smith basket with 8:28 to go, but UCCS pulled away.
Smith led MSU Denver with 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East) scored 16 points, and
Bree Wellington (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan) had a strong game in 16 minutes off the bench with 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field.
Mikayla Gonzales (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) scored 10.
"Our shots just weren't falling," Haave said. "And we can't give up 84 points, especially on the road."
