DENVER -- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team saw the bats come alive on Sunday, winning 13-5 over Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Senior catcher Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo./Lamar) went 3-for-3 with a double and a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the first to get the ball rolling for the Roadrunners
Senior Matt Malkin (Broomfield, Colo./Monarch) hit yet another home run, his seventh of the season and third of the weekend against CSU-Pueblo. The two-run shot was the final nail in the coffin and put the Roadrunners up 13-5.
"We're going to go as those middle-of-the-order guys go," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "If they swing the bats well, we're going to win games, if they don't it's going to be more difficult for us, so it's good to get some confidence going."
Chase Anderson (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) also added three hits including a two-run homer in the first inning. The Roadrunners had a combined 16 hits on the afternoon in addition to walking nine times.
The Roadrunners came into Sunday's game looking to split the weekend series with the ThunderWolves and they did just that. After dropping the first two games, MSU Denver scored a combined 19 runs in the last two games and moved above .500 for the season at 8-7.
Four of the RMAC's 10 teams swept their four-game series to open league play this weekend, leaving MSU Denver and CSU-Pueblo (7-9 overall) tied for fifth at 2-2.
"I think a lot of it is going to be winning innings rather than series," Adame said. "We've got to beat teams inning by inning and pitch by pitch, and if we can win the majority of the at-bats we'll be fine."
Branden Dehority (Chandler, Ariz./Mesquite) threw 4 1/3 strong innings for MSU Denver, giving up three runs and striking out one.
The combination of John Badgett (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) and Eric Cox (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) finished up the game for the Roadrunners on the mound. Badgett (2-0) threw 2 2/3, giving up two runs, and Cox pitched the last two innings.
The Roadrunners will be back in action next weekend as they go on the road to play New Mexico Highlands (7-9 overall, 0-4 RMAC) in a four-game set, beginning with a 3 p.m. on Friday.
