COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Air Force flew past Metropolitan State University of Denver in women's tennis Sunday, as NCAA Division I's 44
th-ranked team picked up a 7-0 victory.
"We came out and competed well, but were just outclassed," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "They were able to take control early in points far better than we were."
Ainsley Winterrowd (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston) had MSU Denver's best match against the Falcons, battling Meredith Laskey at No. 5 singles for three sets before falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
"Ainsley played some of the best tennis I have seen from her, so that's really exciting moving forward," Graetz said.
Winterrowd teamed with
Alex Pessoa (Denver, Colo./Home-schooled) for the Roadrunners' best showing in doubles as the pair dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 2 to Nadeen Lieberman and Elizabeth Barnickel.
Air Force is 17-1 in duals, including 11-1 against Division I foes. The Falcons have outscored their Division I opponents 66-18 and have gotten all but one point in six meetings with Division II teams.
"It's important we play teams like Air Force," Graetz said. "They are a top-40 level Division I program, so it shows the level we need to get to in order to contest for a (Division II) national championship."
MSU Denver is back in action Tuesday, as both the men's and women's teams play host to Concordia (Neb.) in 2 p.m. duals at the Regency Athletic Complex.
