GOLDEN, Colo. – Laney Sheppard launched a ninth-inning home run to lift MSU Denver to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Colorado School of Mines on Saturday for a split of a doubleheader and a split of the four-game series.
Colorado School of Mines won Saturday's opening game 8-3.
Sheppard hit her 10th homer of the season off Sydney Marchando (13-4) to lead off the ninth. Sheppard is now tied with Jennessa Tesone (2008), Molly Clark (2008), Chelsea Brew (2012) and
Sarena Espinoza (2015) for most homers in a season by a freshman.
For the weekend, Sheppard was 6-for-12 (.500) with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs. Sheppard, who has four homers in her last eight games, extended her hitting streak to nine games, during which she is hitting .429 (12-for-28) with four homers and 13 RBIs. She and
Rebecca Gonzales each have 33 RBIs, one behind team leader
Darby McGhee.
"Laney's plate discipline has really improved," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "She's not chasing pitches out of the zone and as a result she's been able to put better swings on balls. It has really allowed her to attack balls better and take advantage of her power.
"Her improvement and finding her power consistently has certainly been something we've needed and has been a big boost."
MSU Denver forced extra innings by tying the game in the top of the seventh.
Ashlee Kim had a leadoff single, moved to second as
Megan Sansburn walked, and to third as Sheppard was hit by a pitch before scoring on Gonzales' single. But the Roadrunners were unable to get another run and left the bases loaded.
Destinee Lopez and McGhee combined for five scoreless relief innings, with McGhee (10-11) working the final 2 2/3 for the victory.
"I was pleased with all three pitchers in game two," Van Wetzinga said.
MSU Denver is 24-25 overall and fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 19-13, while Mines is 24-17 overall and 23-10 for fourth.
After Mines scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, MSU Denver's
Ari Valdez countered with a two-run single in the top of the fourth to pull the Roadrunners back within a run.
In the opener, Sansburn clubbed a solo homer and
Koryna Wright added a two-run double as the Roadrunners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
But the Roadrunners had only two hits the rest of the way as Marchando pitched a complete game.
"We weren't good in many respects the first game," Van Wetzinga said. "Like yesterday, we bounced back with strong pitching performances and good defense."
