DENVER – Jaime Gutierrez foiled Regis again.
MSU Denver's sophomore forward, who turned in a hat trick when the Roadrunners visited Regis last season, scored the game's only goal just 26 seconds into overtime Friday.
"Having
Jaime Gutierrez score within the first minute of overtime was a great emotional boost for us, not only because we needed him to raise his level beyond what he did during regulation time, but also that saved us from running too long into overtime for the first game of the weekend," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Hank Lewis said.
The 1-0 victory came in a non-conference matchup of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals, but it is second critical regional road win for MSU Denver (2-1).
Regis, which dropped to 0-2-1, held an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal but, in the end, it only takes one.
"For many stretches of the game we controlled the ball, but we are still learning about how to get a finished product at the end of great combination play, which means more shots and more threatening goal-scoring opportunities," Lewis said.
"One of our watchwords for the season is being resilient, and though parts of our game plan were tested and Regis ran at us a lot in the final stages of the game, many guys remained resilient and as a team we stuck together to grind out a win."
As usual there were plenty of unsung heroes.
"We didn't get the best play out of all of our players, but it was great to get energetic and competitive contribution out of guys off the bench," Lewis said. "In that regard,
Ian Oltman was just what we needed when we needed a boost.
"Sometimes games call for players to be more gritty than pretty, and this was one of them. We knew that Regis would try to expose our flanks, but our outside backs –
Todd Gibbs and
Brayden Forrester – were superb today at either trimming off their threat or running down balls that were dangerous."
Gutierrez, coming off RMAC Freshman of the Year honors, scored his first goal of the season. He had also put a shot on goal in the 88
th minute.
Goalie
Alessandro Gentile made nine saves to post his second consecutive shutout.
"
Alessandro Gentile made many valuable stops and gave our team confidence to keep fighting," Lewis said.
Having been successful in their first "Denver" game of the season, the Roadrunners play their first home game of the season on Sunday in a special 9 a.m. game against Chaminade (Hawaii) at the Regency Athletic Complex. Chaminade opened its season Friday with a 3-0 win at Colorado Christian.
