@MSUDenverTennis: Two More Shutouts Posted by Tennis Teams

Women beat Newman (Kan.) 7-0, while men claim 4-0 win

PUEBLO, Colo. – Another day, another pair of unbeaten results for the MSU Denver men's and women's tennis programs.

Both teams shut out Newman (Kan.) on Saturday at the CSU-Pueblo Duals, with the Roadrunners' men claiming a 4-0 win and the women by the count of 7-0.

So, that's three shutouts in a row for the men this weekend, while the women – who actually did give up two team points this weekend – still finished off a third shutout in four tries.

"It was another really solid day for both programs," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "Going into today, I classified it as a danger match, but the way we came ready to compete was really impressive."

The chance for a letdown was palpable since the men had run past Dallas Baptist (4-0) and Texas-Permian Basin (5-0) on Friday. But after sweeping the three doubles matches for a point, Mateo Besada (No. 4), Billy McDermott (No. 5) and Joshua King (No. 6) all finished off singles victories to clinch the dual.

"The men didn't drop a match all weekend, which is pretty impressive against solid regional opponents," Graetz said.

The women, meanwhile, opened their weekend at home Thursday with a 7-0 win over a nemesis, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, before winning Friday 4-2 over Dallas Baptist and 5-0 against Fort Hays State (Kan.).

There was no letdown for them either, as even all-time program wins leader Tabitha Porter didn't play doubles and played at No. 3 singles instead of her customary No. 1.

"I asked a lot of the women these last few days," Graetz said. "To play four matches in three days and to come out ahead in all of them is a testament to how far we have come as a program."

The women are off until the ITA Regional Tournament beginning Sept. 26, while the men play the same tournament beginning Oct. 4.
