GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Snakebit again.
MSU Denver settled for a 1-1 tie on Sunday in a women's soccer game against Western Colorado. Even though the Roadrunners picked up a point in the standings with the tie, they walked away feeling like they had earned more in compiling whopping advantages of 39 shots to 8, and 12 shots on goal to one.
Jordan Lewis scored on a penalty kick for the second time in three games to tie the game in the 45
th minute, but the Roadrunners were unable to pull ahead in the game, which was played on the campus of Colorado Mesa.
"They worked tails off," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Tracy Chao said. "We had more opportunities, and the majority of chances, but we left some chances sitting in front of the goal.
"Western did the extra to block shots, to close us down and make it difficult for us to score."
Lewis was denied on another penalty kick in the 67
th minute as Kaeyla Noble made a diving stop for one of her 11 saves, but the Roadrunners were unable to cash in on many other opportunities.
"It's frustrating," Chao said. "It's hard. It's not for lack of ability or opportunity, for sure. We've got the right players and the people we need to win games. This is a result that obviously isn't favorable."
It's the second time this season the Roadrunners have had an overwhelming advantage in shots and yet weren't able to come away with a victory. They had a 21-6 shot advantage in a 1-0 loss to St. Edward's (Texas) on Sept. 9, and also had advantages in shots in losses to Cal State San Bernardino and CSU-Pueblo.
For the season, MSU Denver (3-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) has a 185-84 advantage in shots and have compiled 94-35 margin in shots on goal.
The 39 shots were the most for the Roadrunners since firing 40 in a 6-1 win at Black Hills State on Oct. 16, 2016.
The tie put Western Colorado at 0-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the RMAC.
Chao sees positives as the Roadrunners prepare for home games Friday and Sunday against Dixie State and Westminster.
"I'll tell you what, our freshmen are killing it," she said. "Maddy (Rueter), Kate (Giordano), Kailey (Maness) and (
Arantxa Melendez) put in a lot of minutes this weekend and they aren't playing like freshmen. They are exciting to watch, and to see that drive from players this early in their career is really huge."
