@MSUDenverWBB: Lewis' Career Day Helps MSU Denver in Road Victory

Sophomore forward has career-high 21 points, season-high nine rebounds

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Morgan Lewis scored a career-high 21 points and added a season-high nine rebounds to lift MSU Denver to a 66-58 victory Saturday night over Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball.

Bree Wellington added her third career double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, as MSU Denver improved to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners built a 34-23 halftime lead, but had to hold on against Adams State (2-11, 2-5), which hit eight 3-pointers.

"We were really disappointed after losing (on a basket with five seconds left at Fort Lewis) last night, but to bounce back we really showed a lot of toughness and we go our first road road win all year," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Tanya Haave said. "We played smarter and stuck together and I'm really proud of our effort."

The Grizzlies, who scored the first seven points of the second half to cut the lead to four points, eventually got as close as three points were still within 48-43 to end the third quarter.

Lewis' previous career scoring best was 14 against Regis on Dec. 6 and her previous season high in rebounds was seven, most recently against Colorado Christian on Dec. 7.

"She played great," Haave said. "She's got that scoring mentality around the basket. She got some offensive rebounds and got to the rim."

With MSU Denver leading 51-45 early in the third period, Wellington scored six straight Roadrunners points to make the lead 57-47 with 5:06 to play and the Grizzlies got no closer than eight until there was 1:15 remaining.

Jaiden Galloway had three assists, but Haave credited her for one more in the fourth quarter.

"Bree had been struggling and I was going to take her out and put Jaiden in," Haave said. "But Jaiden said, 'Just let her play a little bit more, and sure enough she got three straight baskets for us. Good coaching by Jaiden."

MSU Denver returns home to face Dixie State on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
