@RoadrunnerSB: Banks' Big Day helps MSU Denver Split

Redshirt freshman has six hits, gets pitching win

DENVER – MSU Denver couldn't quite get over the hump this weekend.

For a second straight day on Saturday, the Roadrunners cruised past struggling New Mexico Highlands but suffered a disappointing loss to Colorado Christian.

The Roadrunners beat Highlands 11-3, then dropped the nightcap to Colorado Christian 11-7.

"We went 2-2, just average," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "I hate average. It can't be a guessing game with what you're going to get, pitching, hitting, defense. Right now, there's too much up and down. Individually and collectively, we need to have higher standards day in and day out."

Kayla Banks starred for the Roadrunners, going 6-for-7 with two RBIs at the plate and pitching a five-inning, complete-game win in the opener to improve to 5-1.

"Last weekend I was horrible," Banks said. "So I wanted to come back and remain calm at the plate and get the job done. I was glad to hit for the team."

Said Van Wetzinga: "She had a good day hitting, and it was a nice bounce-back day for her. She was really consistent, jumped on pitches she could hit, and she was being smart and not trying to do too much, just hitting line drives."

Pitching the opener, Banks gave up just three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out one.

"It wasn't my best day pitching," Banks said. "But I was glad we were able to get some runs and get the win."

Rebecca Gonzales led off the second game with a homer (MSU Denver was the visiting team), but the Roadrunners couldn't sustain the early momentum.

Colorado Christian (14-5, 4-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) broke it open with seven runs in the third inning for a 10-3 lead. The Roadrunners (10-6, 2-2) kept the game going with a run in the fifth to make it 11-4, and Alyssa Richter hit her second homer of the weekend – a three-run shot in the ninth – to make it 11-7.

"That's somebody who is locked in and is taking advantage of an opportunity," Van Wetzinga said. "She's been working hard, and even when she's not playing, she's into the game, checked in and talking to teammates."
