DENVER – On this date in 2002, the MSU Denver men's basketball team moved into the Division II championship game for the second time in three years by crushing 16
th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) 82-52 at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind. The Roadrunners won the title two days later.
The 2002 national semifinal highlights our latest installment of "On This Date in Roadrunners History," which looks back at the biggest accomplishments in MSU Denver athletics on that particular calendar day.
On This Date, March 21:
2002 – The 22
nd-ranked Roadrunners cruised to a 39-15 halftime lead by outshooting IUP 54.8 percent to 22.2 percent from the field (IUP made just four first-half field goals).
Patrick Mutombo scored 17 points, Mike Buggs added 16, Lee Bethea scored 16 and Luke Kendall had 12. Clayton Smith had eight points, nine assists and five steals. The Roadrunners also forced 25 turnovers, 19 of them on steals: Bethea had four and Kendall added three. Two days later, the Roadrunners played Kentucky Wesleyan in the championship game for the third time in four years and won 80-72.

2008 – Jake Palmer was 4-for-8 with a homer and six RBIs as the MSU Denver baseball team swept a doubleheader at Regis, 11-5 and 17-15, to improve to 23-4 overall and 15-0 in the RMAC.
2009 – Tara Mickelson homered in both ends of a doubleheader as the 14
th-ranked MSU Denver softball team swept host Fort Lewis 8-2 and 7-3 to extend its winning streak to 10 games while improving to 22-4 overall and 15-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners hit five homers in the opening game.
2009 – Ted Jamison pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out 10, as MSU Denver won 6-0 at Colorado School of Mines in the first game of a baseball doubleheader.
2010 – Christie Robinson pitched the eighth no-hitter in program history in the opening game, and Brittany Moss set a still-standing school record with 13 strikeouts in the nightcap as No. 8 MSU Denver swept a doubleheader from CSU-Pueblo, 1-0 and 6-4, to extend its winning streak to 14 games. Tara Mickelson ended the second game with a walk-off homer as the Roadrunners improved to 16-1 overall and 13-0 in the RMAC.
2012 – Aubree Maul was 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs and she pitched a complete game as MSU Denver beat Nebraska-Kearney 15-6 in the first game of a softball doubleheader. The Roadrunners completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
2015 – Kaylynn Harmon went 4-for-6 with eight RBIs as No. 25 MSU Denver swept a softball doubleheader at Colorado School of Mines, 13-3 and 9-3, to improve to 19-7 overall and 10-2 in the RMAC.
2017 – Cassidy Smith pitched six scoreless innings of relief as MSU Denver overcame a 6-0 deficit and scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Fort Hays State (Kan.) 9-8 and complete a doubleheader sweep. All-time on March 21, the MSU Denver softball team is 16-2.
