DENVER – It wasn't always perfect. It seldom is.
But No. 1 MSU Denver still found a way to post a relatively easy 3-0 sweep over Colorado Christian on Thursday night for its 17
th straight victory.
"They served us really aggressively, put a lot of pressure on us in the passing lanes, which we knew they were going to do," MSU Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "They're a good serving team. I didn't like how we responded to that most of the night, but we battled and found some good moments within that struggle."
With the 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 victory, MSU Denver improved to 19-2 overall and 13-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and has its best record through the first 21 matches of a season since opening the 1993 campaign at 23-2.
"It wasn't our cleanest match of volleyball, but I'm proud of how we finished," outside hitter
Alexis Benda said. "We owned it and reflected on what we can do better as individuals and as a team."
Said middle blocker
Mikayla McClinton: "It was a match of ups and downs, but I'm proud we were able to stick to it and see it through to the end."
Benda had 10 kills on .450 hitting (one error, 20 attacks),
Kaylee Corsentino had eight kills and McClinton had seven kills and three block assists.
"I had really good opportunities to score," Benda said. "Jessa (Megenhardt) was giving me really great balls to score off, and whenever it wasn't there, coverage always had my back."
Said Glenn: "Alexis was consistent and had a great match. She took big swings, which is what we were asking of the team. She took big rips, and that's why she was successful most of the night."
With Megenhardt and
Rylee Hladky leading the way with three service aces each, MSU Denver dealt seven aces.
"We had some good serving runs, put pressure on their passers," Glenn said. "We thought that would be a good matchup, and that we could get them out of system and score points from the service line. We had a couple of really long runs that created a gap in the score."
Megenhardt set a team-best 17 assists, while Hladky had a team-best 12 digs.
With the victory over Colorado Christian in hand, MSU Denver can now focus on its huge Friday night home match against another crosstown rival in No. 24 Regis.
Regis is 16-4 overall and is 11-1 for second place in the RMAC. The Rangers are also coming off a win last weekend over then-No. 7 Colorado School of Mines.
"We have the same mindset," McClinton said. "We try not to put too much focus on the match. We play each match the same. We know Regis will come out hard and we're prepared for that."
Said Glenn: "It's another aggressive-serving team. It's going to be a fun matchup and a very tactical match."
