@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Post 7-0 Victories

Women win first PacWest dual, men defeat Dallas Baptist

DENVER – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams secured big victories in home duals Thursday.

The women put on a clinic-type performance to solidify their first victory in Pacific West Conference play by sweeping Dominican (Calif.) 7-0.

"Great feeling getting our first PacWest conference win," MSU Denver coach coach Josh Graetz said. "I thought we started tentative in doubles, but settled into the match as it went on."

Although they may have started tentative, the women cruised through their doubles matches by winning all three and earning their first point of the match. They continued to build on that momentum and swept the rest of the matches on the singles side.

Helena Steenberg made No.2 singles seem easy by not dropping a game in her match winning 6-0, 6-0. Isabel Heras and Marie Cool also demonstrated tennis dominance by winning their matches 6-1, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and No. 6 singles, singles.

Lilly Stienemeier showed her ability to stay in matches by winning an intense 3-set dual at No. 5 singles after dropping the first set. Stienemeier won the tiebreaker in the second set to force a third and final set where she was able to hold off her opponent to give MSU Denver the sweep.

The men followed the lead of the women by sweeping Dallas Baptist later in the day to earn their second win of the season.

"The guys took care of business today and did a good job of executing on big points," Graetz said.

Jack McDermott and Jeanloup Auzias continued to show their dominance in doubles by winning 6-3, while Billy McDermott and Alejandro Martinez-Morilla held on to win 6-4 to give the Roadrunners the doubles point.

Jack McDermott had a more difficult time earning his point in No. 2 singles after dropping the first set, but he was able to force a third set and fend off Aaron Capone of Dallas Baptist 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Mateo Besada, at No. 3 singles, was the other male Roadrunner who ran into some trouble in his first set, but he was able break the serve of Gabe Garrido to win 7-5, 6-3. The other four singles matches were won easily by the Roadrunners to give them the 7-0 victory.

The women look to build off their strong play Friday at noon as they take on Dallas Baptist indoors at the Denver Tennis Park.
