@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Men Earn First-Ever PacWest Win in Thriller

Freshman Jeanloup Auzias' win at No. 6 clinches 4-3 victory over Biola (Calif.)

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The MSU Denver men's tennis team earned a key Pacific West Conference road win on Tuesday, knocking off Biola (Calif.) 4-3.

The Roadrunners' women's team lost 5-2 to Biola.

The men won in a thriller as freshmnan Jeanloup Auzias sealed the victory at No. 6 singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win. Auzias was playing for the final and decisive point in the dual, and he was able to persevere from dropping the second set to give the Roadrunners their third win on the season.

The Roadrunners started off hot by winning the doubles point after Mateo Besada/Daniel Llorente and Auzias/Jack McDermott won their Nos. 1 and No. 2 matches 6-2.

The match turned quickly as Biola won the first two singles matches and put the pressure on the Roadrunners to step up. Alejandro Martinez-Morilla and David Kijak did just that as they won their matches to help keep the Roadrunners afloat for Auzias to seal the win.

The win was the Roadrunners' first-ever in PacWest play. In regional rankings released by the ITA earlier Tuesday, Biola was sixth in the West Region, while MSU Denver was seventh.

The women were not able to follow suit after winning their doubles point. Brooklyn Ross/Isabel Heras and Helena Steenberg/Lilly Stienemeier won their doubles matches to get the Roadrunners off to a quick start and take the doubles point.

Unfortunately, they ran into a talented Biola (10-2) team on the singles court. Helena Steenberg was the sole singles player to win by defeating Gaby Carvajal at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3 to give MSU Denver a 2-1 lead.

That lead was not enough as the Roadrunners dropped the next four matches.

Gala Castello put up a fight in her No. 4 singles match in a three-set contest. She started the match off strong by winning the first set 6-3, but she struggled in the subsequent sets, ultimately the losing the next two sets 6-3, 6-3.

The women, ranked 10th in the West Region, have dropped to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in PacWest play. Biola is ranked fourth in the region, the highest-ranked team in the region that isn't in the top 25.

The Roadrunners will continue their California road trip Wednesday against Point Loma (Calif.). The women will take the court at 1 p.m. against the 2-2 Sea Lions, who are ranked sixth in the region, and the men will look to get their second conference win against the 2-4 program at 4 p.m.
