@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Women Drop Close Dual with No. 23 Foe

Two singles losses come in three sets

IRVINE, Calif. – The MSU Denver women's tennis team suffered another tight loss in its final dual on a Pacific West Conference road trip, falling 4-2 Thursday against No. 23 Concordia-Irvine (Calif.) 4-2.

The women dropped their fourth straight dual, but it was another case of the final score not reflecting the quality play for the women.

Things were looking good as the Roadrunners got off to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point to start  the afternoon. Brooklyn Ross and Isabel Heras got things started by winning their No. 1 doubles match 6-4, setting up Marie Cool and Gala Castello to solidify the doubles point with a 7-6 victory.

The Roadrunners ran into another set of three-set matches on the singles court, and unfortunately, they fell on the wrong side of two of the three matches, which ultimately cost them the dual.

Ross was back in action at No. 2 singles after sitting out yesterday's matches, and she was the first victim of a three-setter. Ross lost the first set quickly 6-1, but then battled in the second to top Camila Tumosa 7-5 and force a third set. She played well in the third, but it wasn't enough, and she lost 6-4, which gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Isabel Heras was MSU Denver's sole point winner on the singles court, and was the second to play a three-set match. Heras went from dropping the first set 6-1, to shutting out Heather Richards in the second, and solidifying the win with a third set tiebreak win 7-6.

The final victim of the three-set match was Gala Castello, and like Ross, she ended up on the wrong side. Castello followed suit with her teammates by dropping the first set 6-1 and regrouped in the second to force a decisive third set. She battled in the third, but she couldn't keep the momentum going and lost 6-4.

The Roadrunners will head home after their 0-4 PacWest stint and look to make adjustments as they welcome CSU-Pueblo (0-4) and Nebraska-Omaha (8-8) on Friday, April 2, at the Regency Athletic Complex.
