DENVER – MSU Denver scored first, but the Roadrunners couldn't sustain their early momentum and dropped a 3-1 decision Thursday at Regis in women's soccer.
Katy Coats got her first goal of the season at 20:47, outracing the goalkeeper for a long pass from
Gabriella Gamboa and then gently guiding it into an open net from about 15 yards away.
But Regis tied it at 24:14, then scored two second-half goals less than three minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead with 21:11 to go.
"It was a tale of two halves," MSU Denver assistant coach
Maren McCrary said. "We played well and battled in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities, and
Katy Coats did well to convert on an early look.
"Unfortunately, we didn't maintain the momentum and allowed them to get back in the game. The second half we didn't do a good job of responding to the challenging weather conditions, lost our defensive shape, and only got four chances on goal."
Regis improved to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while MSU Denver fell to 2-6 and 1-4.
Regis had a 21-16 advantage in shots and a 10-7 margin in shots on goal.
Diyonus Walls had seven saves for the Roadrunners.
Gamboa had four shots, including a shot on goal, while
Arantxa Melendez put both of her shots on goal. The short-handed Roadrunners had four field players play the full 90 minutes.
"Missing some key players due to injuries was a factor, but was not the reason for this disappointing result," McCrary said.
