@MSUDenverTennis: Both Roadrunners Teams Cruise to Wins at Colorado Mesa

Women post 7-0 sweep, while men take 5-2 victory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams finished their regular seasons in a big way on Friday with wins over Colorado Mesa.

The women swept their rival by a score of 7-0, and the men defeated the Mavericks 5-2.

The men were able to build off the focus on doubles this week in practice to pull out a doubles win, and to take the first point of the match. Jeanloup Auzias and Jack McDermott learned from their previous doubles match against Colorado Mesa to earn a 6-3 victory at No. 2 and swing the doubles point back to the Roadrunners side.

Things ended differently for the men on the singles court this time around as they dropped two matches, and although they still earned the 5-2 overall win, there is some room for improvement.

"The guys certainly didn't play their best tennis today, but we will take the win," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said.

The men saw big wins from Daniel Llorente at No. 1 singles and Auzias at No. 6. Llorente started his match off with a quick 6-0 win to take the first set, and finished off Christian Albrechtsen 6-4 in the second. Auzias cruised through his match with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

David Kijak bounced back after taking a lopsided first set loss 6-1 to win at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-3 in the final two sets.

"I think today was a good learning lesson for the guys moving into conference next week," Graetz said.

The emphasis on doubles play during practice over the week worked out in the women's favor as they bounced back and swept the doubles competition.

"The ladies played well today," Graetz said. "I was impressed with how we turned things around in doubles this time."

The dynamic duo of Brooklyn Ross and Isabel Heras strung together another dominant 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles. Ross/Heras, ranked 17th in Division II, may have finished their match first, but the duos of Helena Steenberg/Lilly Stienemeier and Marie Cool/Gala Castello also played phenomenal tennis to help the women earn the sweep and the first point of the match.

The women carried the momentum from the doubles court over to the singles court. They swept the Mavericks on the singles court in dominant fashion for the first five matches. The sixth match however, was a different story.

Cool had her work cut out for her at No. 6 singles in a three-set match. Cool won the first set in a 7-6 (4) tiebreak, but lost the second 7-5. But she won the super set 10-5 to give the Roadrunners the sweep.

"I thought we took control of singles early and never looked back," Graetz said.

Both the men and women will be riding win streaks – four for the men and seven for the women -- heading into the conference tournament next week.

Playing in the Pacific West Conference postseason for the first time, the women will kick things off Wednesday 9 a.m. MST (10 a.m. MDT in Denver) in Phoenix. The men's first match of the tournament will be on Thursday at 1 p.m. MST (2 p.m. MDT in Denver). Pairings will be announced Sunday night.
