DENVER – Darby McGhee and
Destinee Lopez pitched complete games, allowing a combined one run on nine hits in 14 innings, and MSU Denver played error-free defense behind them as the Roadrunners swept a Sunday doubleheader from Fort Lewis to complete a four-game weekend sweep.
MSU Denver (22-8 overall, 20-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) won the opening game 5-1 and the second game 5-0.
"Our pitching and defense did a great job this weekend," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Fort Lewis was able to put runners on, but both Darby and Destinee came up with big pitches when it mattered the most and our defense played hard behind them."
McGhee improved to 12-3, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four in the opener. Lopez is 9-2 after pitching a five-hit shutout – her third shutout in 16 days.
True freshman
Shelby Robb had another big day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three RBIs.
Senior
Megan Sansburn and Robb hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning of the opener to push the Roadrunners' lead to 5-1. And Robb's two-run single in the fifth inning of the second game gave the Roadrunners a 5-0 lead.
Freshman
Olivia Dampier with 4-for-7 with two RBIs out of the leadoff spot, and true freshman
Kami Grammerstorf had two RBIs, scored three runs and stole two bases out of the No. 9 hole.
"For the most part, I really liked how our hitters approached their at bats," Van Wetzinga said. "When we swung the bat, it was with authority. As a result, we're hitting the ball harder, more consistently."
The Roadrunners had 20 hits on the day.
"Whether it's our true freshmen or our fifth-year seniors, I think everyone on our team has grown and is starting to find their stride," Van Wetzinga said. "It was fun to watch this weekend."
