MSU Denver finishes 7th with another win over Colorado Mesa

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Undaunted after losing the doubles point, MSU Denver roared through four consecutive singles victories and defeated Colorado Mesa 4-1 on Saturday in the seventh-place match at the Pacific West Conference Tournament.

Alejandro Martinez-Morilla won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, then Mateo Besada followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5, Daniel Llorente won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, and Billy McDermott clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.

It was the Roadrunners' third win over Colorado Mesa in 15 days – the others were by 6-1 and 5-2.

"The guys once again started behind in doubles," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "But we did a good job of taking care of singles."

The Roadrunners' three seniors were all victorious.

Martinez-Morilla improved to 9-7 for the season and 59-43 for his career. Llorente, who won his last five decisions, improved to 7-9 and 48-25, while Besada finished 5-9 and 22-20.

Martinez-Morilla finishes his career third on the program's all-time win list (behind Graetz and Joey Tscherne), while Llorente is tied for 10th.
