CHADRON, Neb. – Haley Doughty homered in each game while MSU Denver rapped out 25 hits and got two strong pitching performances Saturday to defeat Chadron State 11-2 and 9-3 in a doubleheader to complete a four-game weekend sweep.
"This has definitely been our most complete weekend," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "It was great to see our hitters up and down the lineup bust out this weekend. We didn't just get hits, but we got timely hits in big moments. We were able to string them together. It was fun to watch."
In the opener, Doughty hit a two-run, second-inning homer after the Roadrunners had given up a first-inning run, and MSU Denver just added on from there. The top eight hitters in the lineup all had an RBI.
Olivia Dampier was 3-for-4, while
Megan Sansburn,
Shelby Robb,
Mackenzie Jamieson and
Kami Grammerstorf all had two-hit games.
In game two, Dampier's two-run single in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie, and
Megan Sansburn's two-run single gave her four RBIs for the game to make it 6-3. Doughty added a three-run homer in the seventh.
In the circle,
Darby McGhee pitched a complete game in the opener, which was shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule.
Destinee Lopez (4-0) followed suit with a seven-inning complete game in the nightcap, allowing one earned run while striking eight and improving to 2-0 with a save in the series.
"Darby was sharper today and our defense took care of the ball much better," Van Wetzinga said. "Destinee has been pitching really well. She's using her experience and showing great composure in the circle. It's definitely a strength to have the experience of those two on our staff."
Doughty had five RBIs on the day while going 3-for-6. Dampier was 5-for-8 to wrap up a 7-for-13 weekend. Robb was 3-for-7 with an RBI to finish 8-for-13 with two homers and nine runs driven in. Sansburn was 4-for-7 with a homer and five RBIs, making her 7-for-13 for the weekend.
"It was a fun weekend," Van Wetzinga said. "Now we need to use this momentum heading into next week."
MSU Denver (13-5 overall, 12-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) plays host to a non-conference doubleheader at noon Tuesday against Fort Hays State (Kan.) before traveling to UCCS for a four-game RMAC series Saturday and Sunday.
