@RoadrunnerSB: Late Rally Knocks MSU Denver Out in RMAC Tournament

Despite playing short-handed, Roadrunners built 6-0 lead

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Regis used a late rally to overcome a 6-0 deficit and knocked MSU Denver out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday, defeating the short-handed Roadrunners 9-6.

"We were short-handed without some key players this weekend, but the team fought hard," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said.

Despite being low on numbers, second-seeded MSU Denver forged a six-run lead as Destinee Lopez took a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning and Kami Grammerstorf fueled the offense with a three-run triple in the fourth that made it 5-0.

Lopez, an All-RMAC first team selection, pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits after pitching 6 2/3 innings Friday.

"Destinee Lopez was a leader and did everything she could for the team," Van Wetzinga said.

Mackenzie Jamieson drove in runs with a first-inning single as well as a fourth-inning single that made it 6-0. Kayla Banks followed Jamieson's first-inning RBI with one of her own on a run-scoring single as the Roadrunners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

Jamieson finished the day 4-for-4 as MSU Denver had 12 hits – including two each from Grammerstorf, Banks and Whitnee Alexander.

"We had individuals who haven't necessarily had a lot of opportunities this season step up in big ways when we needed them to," Van Wetzinga said.

Regis scored two runs in the sixth, then scored seven two-out runs in the seventh to take the lead. All seven runs were unearned.

Undaunted, MSU Denver (29-11) put two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Regis was able to survive and advance.

"It was a disappointing end and not representative of how good this team is, but ultimately they did a great job of representing MSU Denver and Roadrunner softball," Van Wetzinga said.
