ALAMOSA, Colo. – Rebecca Gonzales tied a school record with five hits in the opening game and MSU Denver rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Adams State on Sunday.
Gonzales had two triples as part of the Roadrunners' 23-hit attack in the opener as MSU Denver rolled 19-7 before winning the second game 7-2.
Gonzales matched a feat that has been done only twice before in program history – both Sandy Beman against UCCS in 1990 and Kaylynn Harmon against New Mexico Highlands in 2014 had five-hit games.
Gonzales led off the game with a triple, added singles in the second and third innings, tripled to lead off the fifth and had an RBI single in the sixth. She scored four runs.
"It's awesome that Rebecca tied the record, but I'm not shocked she did," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "She's so consistent and mature with her approach to the plate. It's fun to watch her work."
The 23 hits matched the most for the Roadrunners since the team had a program-record 25 in a 1990 game. MSU Denver also had 23 hits against Montana State-Billings in 2013 and against New Mexico Highlands during Harmon's big game in 2014.
MSU Denver completed a four-game sweep of the Grizzlies to improve to 29-9 overall and 27-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
"I was really happy with our hitters this weekend," Van Wetzinga said. "Rebecca and Kami (Grammerstorf) were spark plugs for us at the top and bottom of the lineup. They were getting on base and hitters behind them were coming up with big at-bats."
Grammerstorf was 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs Sunday.
Gonzales finished the day 6-for-9 with five runs, while
Mackenzie Jamieson was 5-for-9 with four runs and three RBIs,
Megan Sansburn was 4-for-8 with three runs and three RBIs,
Shelby Robb was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and
Kayla Banks was 4-for-7 with five RBIs.
Banks was overshadowed by Gonzales in the opener while going 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Olivia Dampier played only in the opener and was 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs while getting a double and a triple and adding a stolen base.
"We used our speed on the base paths really well," Van Wetzinga said. "We were being aggressive and capitalizing on mistakes and taking extra bases.
"Every time Adams State scored, we answered back with good at bats and supported our pitchers with runs."
Darby McGhee improved to 16-3 while getting the start in the opening game and also had a three-hit (3-for-6) day at the plate.
Like McGhee,
Destinee Lopez (12-3) picked up her second win of the weekend in the circle, working the first six innings of the second game and allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out five.
"I really like where our team is at right now," Van Wetzinga said. "I'm excited for what they can accomplish in the next couple of weeks."
