WICHITA, KAN. – Patience was a virtue Sunday for the MSU Denver men's soccer team.
And patience was rewarded, too.
Hernan Ibarra scored in the 81
st minute to lift the Roadrunners to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Newman (Kan.) on Sunday.
"It was the first time this year that a team sat back against us," MSU Denver coach
Nick Kirchhof said. "It was a little different to be the team pressing for that next goal. There are a lot of positives that came out of this one. We were able to overcome a little bit of adversity."
MSU Denver had commanding advantages in shots (15-6), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (6-2), but had to sweat it out before earning the win and evening its record at 3-3.
Tyler Welch got into the penalty box and hooked a pass over to
Bryson Chiles, who then found Ibarra.
"Hernan stayed real busy and he was able to get a volley inside the 6," Kirchhof said. "It was a good goal and getting runners inside the box in something we've been working on at practice."
It was the first goal of the season for Ibarra, a transfer from Division I Robert Morris.
"What's great is that we can rotate our front six guys," Kirchhof said. "Everybody is working hard. On certain days, different people will help us and contribute and that is helping move the team forward. Today Hernan was able to be that guy for us."
After five straight games away from home, including four true road games, MSU Denver returns home for games Thursday at 6 p.m. against Regis on Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day and Sunday at noon against Colorado School of Mines.
"We've talked about how this will be our last big road trip for a while," Kirchhof said. "Having played Thursday, and then coming back to play a fresh team after a 7 ½-hour road trip – those can be excuses, but we did real well managing that and putting that aside. Any time you go on the road, it's tough to get a result, but we were able to do it in regular time and we were pressing and looking for a goal.
"Now we're excited to be home. I hope people will still come out and support us, just in case they forgot that we do play there."
