SPEARFISH, S.D. – The MSU Denver women's soccer team left nothing to chance Wednesday.
The Roadrunners scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes and rolled to a 4-0 victory at Black Hills State to wrap up regular-season play and nail down the fifth seed for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
"Our team was still a little dissatisfied with the result Sunday at Fort Lewis (a 1-0 loss), and we had talked about coming out and setting the tone early," MSU Denver coach
Kat Mertz said. "Black Hills had scored early in a couple of games and made it a good battle because they don't give up. So we wanted to dictate the narrative, and our players came out ready to play."
Jaimy Sawaged had two goals and an assist, and
Paloma Teran added a goal and two assists as the Roadrunners improved to 11-3-4 overall and 7-2-3 in the RMAC. MSU Denver has surpassed 10 wins in a season for the first time since 2014.
Sawaged scored at 5:01 on an assist from Teran, then Teran scored on an assist from Sawaged at 10:49 before freshman
Isa Durkin scored on an assist from Teran at 16:18.
"We knew we could get at their backs," Mertz said. "It was just playing a little differently on a grass field, playing a little more direct. Once we got to the final third, then we just wanted to play some good soccer."
Sawaged scored the Roadrunners' final goal unassisted at 51:17.
Sawaged has eight goals and three assists this season, while Teran is at five goals and five assists. Durkin scored her second career goal.
MSU Denver had advantages of 29-7 in shots, 15-2 in shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks while dropping Black Hills State to 1-13-2 overall and 1-11 in the RMAC.
Kylie Bach (6-1-3) had two saves in her sixth shutout of the season.
Overall the Roadrunners have 11 shutouts this season, including five in their last six games of the season.
MSU Denver heads on the road for a first-round matchup in the RMAC Tournament on Sunday, and will play at either UCCS or Westminster.
