DENVER – As No. 1 MSU Denver flexed its collective muscle while marching toward potentially making history, All-American
Rylee Hladky continued to cement her status as one of the program's best-ever players.
The Roadrunners rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Western Colorado (25-9, 25-14, 25-17) on Friday night to improve to 22-1 overall and 15-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The victory was the Roadrunners' 37
th straight regular-season league win dating to the 2020 season, putting them two away from tying the RMAC record.
MSU Denver can clinch the top seed for the RMAC Tournament with a win in Saturday's 4 p.m. Senior Night match with Fort Lewis.
Meanwhile Hladky picked up four early digs before getting most of the night off, but that was enough to make her the seventh player in program history to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
"It's quite an honor to be mentioned with those players," Hladky said. "There's such a big legacy here."
Hladky is the first Roadrunner since Santaisha Sturges in 2018 to top 1,000 in both categories and only the third in the rally-scoring era (dating to 2001).
"It's even more impressive that she's gotten it done in less than four years," MSU Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "I'm really proud of her. She's grown in her leadership this year and all the intangible things she does for our team. You see the kills and the digs, but she does a lot for us in other areas."
All 14 players got in on the action for the Roadrunners, with nearly all playing in at least two sets.
"Our challenge side is so good," Hladky said. "They push us every day in practice, and they beat consistently. They're the reason we're where we are today. I loved to see what they did."
Kaylee Corsentino had eight kills on career-best .727 hitting, Riley Anderson had eight kills on career-best .667 hitting, and Maddy Williams was a force in the middle with five kills on .400 hitting, and matched a career high with six blocks – including a career-best two solos.
"It was a great team win," Glenn said. "When there's a different style on the other side of the net, it's hard for us to get into our rhythm.
"Everyone who came off the bench did a great job. They played at a great level, and we didn't miss a beat."
Delaney Eckhardt set 22 assists and added four service aces, while
Ashlyn Cianciulli had three service aces to go with 11 digs. Cianciulli now has 1,169 career digs (she passed both Sturges and Verna Julaton on the MSU Denver career list, and now ranks 13
th all-time).
As a team the Roadrunners hit .366, including .450 in the first set, to improve to .297 for the season – the program record is .294, set in 1993.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners won their 16
th straight match while holding Western Colorado (3-19, 2-13) to .000 hitting. That was the second-best effort of the season defensively for MSU Denver, which came into the match fourth in Division II with a .115 opponent hitting percentage.
Basically, the Roadrunners – spending their first week at No. 1 in the country after five weeks at the top spot last year – looked like what a No. 1 team should look like.
"It's an accomplishment, and we worked hard to be here," Hladky said. "But we know that it doesn't necessarily mean anything, because our goal is to win a national championship. So we continue to grind every day in practice so that when it comes down to it, we've put ourselves in the best position to do that."
