DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.
Today is the 23rd installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver.
Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.
Today, basketball star Stephanie Allen is featured.
Allen, whose career spans the 1995-96 through 1999-2000 seasons and included two trips to the NCAA Tournament, is still the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,732 points and with 248 made 3-point field goals. She graduated as the program's all-time leader in field goals made (553), free throws made (378), and assists (393) – she has since dropped to second, third and third in those categories.
Allen was selected to the RMAC All-East Division team all four years, including first team honors in 1998 and 1999. She was also selected first team All-RMAC in 1998. She was the named to the RMAC's All-Time Team for the league's centennial celebration in 2006.
Her 41 points against Western Colorado on Jan. 3, 1998, remains the MSU Denver single-game record. That game was apart of one of the best seasons in program history as the Roadrunners went 25-5 and were crowned RMAC regular season co-champions and RMAC Tournament champions, while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.
Allen was inducted into the Roadrunners Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
