DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.
Today is the 27
th installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver.
Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.
Today, basketball star Jasmine Cervantes is featured.
During her standout, four-season career from the 2008-09 through the 2011-12 seasons, Cervantes compiled career totals of 1,118 points (10
th in program history), 672 rebounds (seventh), 462 assists (second) and 227 steals (second). The former point guard is even third with 90 career blocked shots. When her career ended, she was seventh in points and fifth in rebounds.
Only three players have played more than Cervantes' 120 games in an MSU Denver uniform.
She recorded the first triple-double in program history, with 13 points, 17 rebounds and 11 assists against Western New Mexico on Dec. 2, 2011. She also had three blocked shots and three steals in that 109-47 victory.
Cervantes was named All-America honorable mention by both the WBCA and Division II Bulletin her senior season, when she was also an all-region second team selection. She was All-RMAC first team as a senior after earning second-team honors the previous year. She was named to the regional all-tournament team in both 2011 and 2012.
MSU Denver was 57-7 during Cervantes' final two seasons, including 41-3 in regular-season RMAC play while winning two regular-season RMAC titles, playing in two NCAA Division II Tournaments and winning the Central Region championship to advance to the national quarterfinals in 2011.
Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
