toTUCSON, Ariz. – Katie Maney ripped a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to put MSU Denver in front 3-2 and jump start a five-run rally as the Roadrunners defeated Western Washington 6-2 Sunday in their final game at the Desert Stinger.
MSU Denver finished the high-level tournament at 3-2, winning three straight after losing twice on Friday.
"I'm really proud of how the team responded after day one and how we finished today," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Playing five games over three days isn't easy. The team fought hard to finish the weekend and leave with a 3-2 record. That's a big accomplishment for a young team, and a team that was down a couple players due to injury."
After Maney's go-ahead triple,
Emily Shreves delivered an RBI single and
Hannah DiFabio added a run-scoring double.
Mackenzie Jamieson's RBI single capped the rally and accounted for the game's final run.
Meanwhile, pitcher
Sarah Norton finished off a stellar tournament by pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit relief for the win. Norton appeared in all five games of the tournament and was 2-1 with a one save while compiling a 3.15 ERA. In 20 innings she allowed 24 hits, with five walks and 17 strikeouts.
"(Starter) Destinee (Lopez) and Sarah had a lot of pitches on them, but they combined for a tough pitching staff win today," Van Wetzinga said.
Maney, Shreves, DiFabio, Jamieson and
Ari Valdez were all 2-for-3 for the Roadrunners. Shreves drove in the Roadrunners' first run with a single, and she, Valdez and
Alexia Boring all had stolen bases.
"We got really big, clutch hits up and down the lineup today," Van Wetzinga said. "
Emily Shreves,
Ari Valdez, and
Katie Maney all came up big in big moments."
For the tournament, DiFabio was 7-for-15 (.467) with one homer and four RBIs, while Maney was 5-for-17 (.294) with two homers and six RBIs. Valdez was 4-for-10 (.400), and Shreves was 4-for-14 (.286).
DiFabio was named to the all-tournament team.
"It was fun to watch the team compete and finish strong and I'm proud of them," Van Wetzinga said.
