DENVER – Rebecca Gonzales had two hits and three RBIs and true freshman
Audrey Burt pitched a complete-game four-hitter in her first collegiate start as MSU Denver defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 10-2 in the second game of a doubleheader that ended after six innings due to the eight-run rule on Sunday.
In the opener, Cal Poly Humboldt did all its damage during a six-run second inning and hung on for a 6-3 victory.
"The second game we were able to have tougher at bats and use our speed which helped get things going for us," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. 'I wish we could've done that sooner and in game one, but it's something we can focus on this week in practice."
In the second game, Gonzales' two-run single broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second and put the Roadrunners (3-1) ahead to stay. Gonzales also had an RBI single in the fifth, bumping the lead to 9-2.
Burt, who pitched briefly in relief Saturday, yielded a second-inning solo homer but little else. She walked one and struck out six.
"Audrey got her first collegiate win, and it was really great to see how she bounced back from yesterday," Van Wetzinga said.
After falling behind 6-0 in the opener, the Roadrunners made it interesting.
"Humboldt had been scoring a lot of runs in their first four games, so I was happy with how our pitchers held them in check aside from one inning," Van Wetzinga said.
MSU Denver got an unearned run in the fifth inning, then scored twice in the sixth on RBI singles by
Miah Hartvigsen and
Ari Valdez.
The Roadrunners take a 3-1 record into next weekend's Desert Stinger in Tucson, Ariz., where they'll play five games in three days.
"Overall it was a good start to the season," Van Wetzinga said. "To be expected, there are things we need to improve on, but I like where we are at. We had a lot of people contribute this weekend, which was nice to see."
