@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Erupts Offensively in Doubleheader Sweep

Roadrunners score a season-high 13 runs in each game

PUEBLO, Colo. – MSU Denver scored a baker's dozen in each game and cruised to a softball doubleheader sweep at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, with wins of 13-4 and 13-3.

Rebecca Gonzales returned to the lineup and was 5-for-9 with two doubles, four RBIs and five runs out of the leadoff spot to spark the offense.

Katie Maney, Mackenzie Jamieson, Jaiden Geist and Ari Valdez all hit three hits on the day, with Maney, Geist and Valdez all slugging homers. Miah Hartvigsen also added a three-run, pinch-hit homer in the opening game.

MSU Denver, posting a season high in runs in each game, improved to 11-10 overall and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

"It was ready nice to see hitters up and down our lineup step up in different ways today," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We've been talking about being more consistent and putting quality at-bats together. Today we did a much better job of that, especially in game two.

"It was also great to see us score in different ways. We hit home runs and we used our speed. Being able to do both is a fun way to pay softball."

Julia Heitz (1-0) earned the first-game win with 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing only one run (unearned) on two hits.

Audrey Burt (4-4) was the complete-game winner in the nightcap allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

"Both Audrey and Julia were really sharp and solid today," Van Wetzinga said. "Julia kept them off balance and got a lot of ground ball outs.

"Audrey was attacking and throwing hard today. She got a lot of swing and misses. When she did give up a big hit, it was a solo shot and she bounced right back which is great."

The teams wrap up their series with another doubleheader, scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.

"Overall we had really good energy and competitiveness," Van Wetzinga said. "The goal now is to continue that and come out that way tomorrow."
