@MSUDenverBSB: Roadrunners Explode for 25 Runs in Series Opener

PItching effort was strong as well

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – This, apparently, is what it looks like when MSU Denver gets good hitting and good pitching at the same time.

The Roadrunners rolled to a 25-6 victory over UCCS on Friday in the opener of a four-game series with a 24-hit barrage.

"Finally, everybody in the lineup hit at the same time," MSU Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "We got some good at-bats all the way up and down the lineup and we had a lot of hard-hit balls. Maybe we had one cheap hit, but everything else was barreled up. We had a lot of loud outs."

Chase Anderson was 3-for-5 with a homer and six RBIs, Blake Mattey was 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs, Caleb Albaugh was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Tanner Garner was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the regular starters, and Strain was able to get his talented group of reserves some needed at-bats and among that group Zach Paschke hit a three-run homer.

"I was excited we were able to get everybody in and those guys had some good at-bats, too," Strain said.

The Roadrunners (17-10 overall, 8-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored eight runs in the second inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, six in the sixth, three in the seventh and five in the ninth.

The 25 runs and 24 hits matched the team's most each category since a 31-3 win over Mary (N.D.) on March 1, 2019, that included 27 hits.

On the mound, Reichle Arcilise (5-2) held the Mountain Lions to four runs (three earned) while striking out five in seven innings, Carter Akerfelds gave up one run on two hits in three innings, striking out five, and Tyler Schultz wrapped it up, allowing one run on three hits in the ninth.

"Reichle was able to pitch through some things that happened, and it was good to see Ack get extended like that," Strain said. "And really, if we hadn't lost a couple of balls in the sun, they probably only score two runs against us.

The teams resume their series Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
