ALAMOSA, Colo. – It was Batman television show, circa 1960s, all weekend for the MSU Denver baseball team.
Bang! Zap! Pow!
The Roadrunners clubbed five more home runs, running their total to 13 in the four-game series, and completed a four-game sweep of Adams State with a 27-8 victory on Saturday. The power outburst gave MSU Denver a total of 83 homers for the season to smash the program record of 81 – set last year in 44 games – in its 42
nd game of the season.
With wins of 21-12, 25-11, 7-3 and 27-8 over the weekend, the Roadrunners' total of 80 runs obliterated a school record for runs in any four consecutive games (the record was 69, set in 2012) as well as for runs in a four-game series (66, set just three weeks ago).
"It was a good weekend," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "The offense swung the bats well all series. When you score 80 runs on a weekend, that's pretty impressive. And I know the guys wanted the home run record in fewer games than last year's team, so that was fun to see them do that this weekend."
Zach Schuler supplied most of the muscle Saturday, with two homers and six RBIs.
Chase Anderson,
Cam Yuran and
Zach Paschke also homered. Anderson was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and
Cody Schultz was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, as the Roadrunners banged out 23 hits.
Meanwhile on the mound,
Austin Stone worked three one-hit innings before the Roadrunners turned it over to the bullpen.
Conner Nantkes struck out five in three innings, and
Brady Mello and
Brandon Moore finished up.
"Stone gave us a great start, and it was good to get him out of the game early and get some other guys opportunities on the mound," Strain said.
MSU Denver (27-15 overall, 16-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) is in a virtual tie for first place in the league with Colorado Mesa (27-9, 14-6), which won three of four over the weekend against Regis.
The Roadrunners have next weekend off before playing four games at Regis (22-19-1, 15-9) from April 29 through May 1.
