COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – MSU Denver closed out the tennis regular season with three victories Saturday, two by the women and another for the men.
The women won 6-1 at CSU-Pueblo in the morning, then drove up Interstate 25 and collected another victory, 7-2 at Colorado College, before heading home. The men defeated Colorado College 9-0.
The Colorado College matches were played with the Division III scoring system, with all three doubles matches counting individually. The Roadrunners' only losses came in positions where the short-handed women's team had to forfeit.
"The ladies took care of business against CSU-Pueblo today," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "Against Colorado College, they handled the change in conditions well. We went from indoors (at Pueblo) to outdoors in one day, and that is very rare in college tennis."
With its seventh straight win, MSU Denver improved to 12-8 on the season. The Roadrunners dominated at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles, losing a combined 16 games in six sets.
Marie Cool (13-11) won both her matches 6-0, 6-1 to increase her winning streak to seven.
Kayla Myburgh improved to 8-6 at No. 4, while
Monica Guarin's sixth straight win put her at 14-8.
The 63
rd-ranked MSU Denver men won for a fifth straight time to improve to 13-3.
Jeanloup Auzias (No. 1 singles) and
Andy Caruana (No. 3) each lost only one game, while
Alejandro Jimenez won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Caruana has won 11 straight to improve to 17-4, while Auzias is 19-8 and Jimenez 14-3.
Dayton Fisher, who has been in the doubles lineup all season, earned his first dual-match at start at No. 6 singles and came from behind for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (10-6) victory.
"I'm proud of the guys for sweeping a talented Colorado College team which has gotten better," Graetz said. "We had very windy conditions, I thought we played well. It had been windy all week in practice, so I think that really helped us.
"I'm very happy for Dayton getting his first singles dual-match opportunity and getting the win."
