SUPRRISE, Ariz. – The 61
st-ranked MSU Denver men's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory Saturday over Fresno Pacific (Calif.) in the seventh-place dual at the Pacific West Conference Tournament.
MSU Denver improved to 14-5 for the season. The Roadrunners will now await the May 2 announcement of the NCAA Tournament field to see if their season will continue. MSU Denver entered the PacWest Tournament as the seventh seed, although the Roadrunners were fourth in the NCAA West Region rankings (the only teams in the West Region are also PacWest teams). Four teams will advance to the NCAA West Regional.
Against Fresno Pacific, a team the Roadrunners defeated 6-1 at the Assembly Athletic Complex earlier this season, MSU Denver jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back.
Carlos Pinedo and
Andy Caruana at No. 2, and
Jeanloup Auzias and
Dayton Fisher at No. 3, won doubles matches by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 respectively.
MSU Denver then quickly won three singles matches – the Roadrunners were leading in the other three singles matches (and were also leading in No. 1 doubles for that matter) when the respective clinch took place.
Completed singles matches included Caruana winning his 13
th straight match to improve to 19-4. After Caruana won the first set 6-0, Caruana's opponent retired.
Pinedo won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and
Billy McDermott was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 5.
Pinedo is 16-7, while McDermott is 7-2 this season and 22-10 for his career.
In doubles, Caruana/Pinedo improved to 16-8, while Auzias/Fisher are 10-8.
