DENVER – Regis got a pair of well-pitched games Sunday to sweep a doubleheader from MSU Denver and claim a series victory with wins of 7-2 and 3-1.
Kylie Harpman posted her second 10-strikeout complete game of the series in the opener, pitching five no-hit innings and taking a one-hit shutout in the sixth before surrendering three hits, including a two-run single by
Ari Valdez, in the seventh.
Abby Covington held the Roadrunners to five hits in a complete-game finale.
"Scoring 3 runs in a doubleheader isn't going to win you many games," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We need to continue to learn how to show up and compete and put together tough at bats. I give a lot of credit to Regis' pitchers. They attacked the strike zone and put the ball on the corners."
Both teams are now 31-20 overall for the season, but Regis is now 25-11 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, while MSU Denver is 19-15 in league games after the Rangers' 3-1 series win. Regis took control of third place in the league, while MSU Denver dropped to fifth.
MSU Denver jumped out to the lead in the second inning of Sunday's first game, as
Rebecca Gonzales singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on
Jaiden Geist's RBI single.
Hannah DiFabio had two hits in the second game.
"Our defense made some nice plays this weekend," Van Wetzinga said. "Our outfield was busy. and they also made plays to keep us in games. It would be nice to build off that on the offensive side."
In the circle,
Destinee Lopez turned in 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings in the second game, allowing one hit while walking two.
"It would've been nice to give our pitchers more run support, especially Destinee and Julia (Heitz) in game two," Van Wetzinga said. "They kept us in the game. They needed support."
