DENVER – MSU Denver Director of Athletics Todd Thurman has announced that Chelsea Nugent has been hired as the program's head athletic trainer.
 
A Denver-area native, Nugent has been on the staff at Division III New York University since 2018, most recently as associate head athletic trainer.
 
She originally joined NYU as athletic trainer/facility and events supervisor.
 
"We're so happy that Chelsea has decided to come back home to Denver and oversee our training staff," Thurman said. "She is a great fit for our department, and we know she will do a great job in this role."

At NYU, Nugent has worked mainly with the women's volleyball, golf and softball teams, as well as the men's golf team. In her other capacity, Nugent assisted with facilities and events operations at NYU's 404 Lafayette Athletic Facility.

Prior to starting at NYU, Nugent served as assistant athletic trainer and Olympic sport medical coordinator at Queens (N.Y.) for two years. She assisted in providing medical coverage for 19 sports teams, as well as creating and implementing rehabilitation programs and collaborating with the strength and conditioning staff to generate injury prevention programs.

Before that, she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at South Carolina from August of 2014 through May 2016. While there, she provided coverage to all intramural and club sports, including rugby, lacrosse, soccer, and ice hockey. Nugent spent the first year splitting time between a local high school and working as a physician extender with the Palmetto Health-USC Orthopedic Center. During the summer, Nugent assisted in the care of the South Carolina football team.  

Nugent earned a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Stony Brook in 2014 and a master's in advanced athletic training from South Carolina in 2016.
