PUEBLO, Colo. – The MSU Denver tennis teams earned close 4-3 wins over Lubbock Christian (Texas), and the women picked up a second win over Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Friday in dual play at CSU-Pueblo.
The men dropped the doubles point but rallied for four singles wins, capped by
Juho Kantola's dramatic 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11) win at No. 2.
"Today could have gone either way," Graetz said. "The men started slowly again in doubles, but found a way to pull through in singles. Special mention goes to Juho for winning an important marathon match."
The Roadrunners' women showcased their depth in the win over Lubbock Christian, capturing Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to win that point and then winning singles matches at Nos. 4, 5 and 6.
Both
Hanna Haber at No. 4 and
Kambra Roles at No. 5 went to a super-set to win – Haber won 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) and Roles won 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
"The ladies pulled out a very close match against a talented Lubbock team," Graetz said. The doubles point was crucial, and we played the right points well."
Roles and Haber each won a second singles match in the 7-0 win over Fort Hays State, and Haber picked up a second doubles win while playing with
Marie Cool.
Isabel Heras at No. 1 was the only singles player seriously challenged – Heras won 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).
"We started a little slow against Fort Hays, but took control in singles," Graetz said. "It was a solid win for our ladies."
The Roadrunners return home Saturday for 11 a.m. duals against St. Mary's (Texas), one of Division II's best programs. The Rattlers' women reached the national quarterfinals last season, while their men played in the NCAA Tournament.
