Title IX Series: Canada Still is Roadrunner Volleyball's Only Two-Time All-America First Team Selection

She still ranks among program's best in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and points

DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.

Today is the 14th installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver.

Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.

Today, volleyball star Crissy Canada is featured.

Inducted into the MSU Denver Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, Canada played at MSU Denver from 1991 through 1994 and she remains the only player in program history to have twice been named the AVCA All-America first team (1993 and 1994).

She was the program's all-time leader in kills and still ranks fourth with 1,493, and she is the program's all-time leader (minimum 2,000 attacks) in points (2,104.5), hitting percentage (.369), total blocks (738) and block assists (471), while also ranking second in solo blocks (267) and third in blocks per set (1.49).

She is still MSU Denver's single-season record holder in points per set, with 5.6 in 1994, and block assists, with 154 in 1993, and owns the single-match mark for attack percentage when she hit .875 as the Roadrunners swept Florida Southern on Oct. 31, 1993.

She was a three-time all-region first team and three-time All-Colorado Athletic Conference first team selection, and she was the CAC's player of the year in 1994.

In her four seasons in a Roadrunners uniform, her teams posted a 114-45 mark, including 32-5 in 1993, and made two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
