SALT LAKE CITY – Second-ranked MSU Denver took care of business Saturday, dispatching host Westminster 3-0 in a mere 68 minutes less than 24 hours after fighting for a three-set win at No. 20 Colorado Mesa and then making a four-hour late-night drive.
"I'm really proud of this group," MSU Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "Last night was a three-setter that felt like a five-setter. It was a very taxing match, mentally and physically, and then we got in at 1:30 in the morning, had a short night, and had to refocus and rescout, and we were still able to go out and play Roadrunner volleyball. I'm proud of our ability to stay on task regardless of the circumstances."
MSU Denver (13-1 overall, 6-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) cruised to the 25-13, 25-17, 25-11 win while hitting a blistering season-best .396 with just five attack errors – the program's lowest error total since committing just four in a sweep of Millersville (Pa.) on Aug. 28, 2009.
"We were a really good matchup against this team," Glenn said. "We got our entire roster playing time, and everyone did a great job of stepping in and keeping our level of play high. We also served really tough (including six service aces), so we were able to keep them off the net most of the night, and that made the match a lot easier for us."
Playing in front of about 15 to 20 family and friends, junior outside hitter
Maddie Lindsay capped a stellar weekend with nine kills on .600 hitting (zero errors, 15 attacks) in only two sets.
"It's the first time in her career that she's gotten to go to her hometown and play," Glenn said. "She had a great crowd there with lots of support.
"Offensively, she has really been producing a lot for us. She had a great matchup again tonight and we were able to take advantage of that matchup really well."
Lindsay, who played three seasons at Division I Hartford of the America East Conference, also had nine kills in only two sets Friday at Colorado Mesa and for the weekend hit a majestic .500, with only one error in 34 attacks.
MSU Denver extended its streak of regular-season RMAC wins to 28, and Glenn won her 100
th regular-season RMAC match – she's 100-8 for a sublime .926 winning percentage.
The Roadrunners have dropped just one set in six RMAC matches this season.
"I think the RMAC is one of the top conferences in the country," Glenn said. "The depth of our conference is great – we have five teams that are either ranked or receiving votes."
Meanwhile Saturday, All-American
Rylee Hladky had eight kills and two aces in two sets,
Riley Anderson had seven kills on .500 hitting and
Kelsey Gordon had five kills while hitting .556.
The Division II national leaders in blocks coming into the weekend, MSU Denver was credited with four – all solo – against the Griffins.
Ashlyn Cianciulli had a team-high 21 digs, while
Delaney Eckhardt set a team-best 12 assists and added 12 digs.
"The efficiency of this team has been impressive," Glenn said. "We're getting it done in three. Our goal is to be efficient and play our game from start to finish. That's what the focus was today, and minus a few runs there and there and couple of silly plays, we were able to refocus quickly. It's a matter of not letting small plays become a big deal."
MSU Denver is back at the Auraria Event Center next weekend, with matches at 7 p.m. Friday against South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State at 3 p.m. Saturday. Saturday's match precedes the annual MSU Denver Athletics Hall of Fame banquet.
