Title IX Series: Magee Was MSU Denver's First RMAC Player of the Year in Women's Basketball

While leading Roadrunners to the NCAA Tournament, she had a two-season career that still resonates

DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.

Today is the 30th installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver.

Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.

Today, women's basketball star Farrah Magee is featured.

Magee led the Roadrunners to two 20-win seasons in 1996-97 and 1997-98.  Magee became the second All-American in women's basketball history at MSU Denver, earning Daktronics honorable mention honors as a senior.

Magee averaged a double-double of 15.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for her career and at the close of her career her scoring average ranked fifth in program history and her rebound average was fourth. She also averaged 2.5 steals per game, which ranked second in program history at the close of her career, and her blocked-shot average of 0.8 was fourth. She also finished in the top 10 in school history in rebounds (541), blocked shots (43) and steals (133) despite playing just two seasons.

As a junior, she averaged 12.1 points and 7.8 rebounds, helping the Roadrunners to a 20-7 record. But her senior season was one of the most dominant ever at MSU Denver. She averaged 18.3 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.1 steals. Her 548 points and 361 rebounds were the second-most in program history in their respective categories, and her 514 field goal attempts were tied for the highest total at MSU Denver.

In addition to her All-America honors, Magee became the first player in school history to be named RMAC Player of the Year. She was also the RMAC Tournament most valuable player and helped MSU Denver to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Magee joined the MSU Denver Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
