@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners Play to Another Draw on the Road

MSU Denver posts its eighth shutout of the season

DURANGO, Colo. – MSU Denver picked up another point on the road Sunday in women's soccer, playing host for Fort Lewis to a 0-0 draw.

The Roadrunners, who played to a 2-2 tie with Western Colorado on Thursday in the first game of the road trip, are now 6-5-6 overall and 5-3-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

"I'm a little disappointed to walk away from whole weekend with just two points, but Fort Lewis is a good team and has been scoring some goals," MSU Denver coach Kat Mertz said. "So it's nice to walk away with a shutout. We executed our game plan really well, but we were unfortunate to not get a goal."

With 18 points in league play, the Roadrunners ended the game in fifth place, but slipped to sixth with CSU Pueblo winning later Sunday at winless New Mexico Highlands. But CSU Pueblo, which now has 19 points, closes the regular season Wednesday at potential league champion UCCS, while MSU Denver plays host to Colorado Christian – tied for 10th with a 1-6-3 record in RMAC play – and the Roadrunners would jump back into fifth with a win or tie (based on a head-to-head win over the ThunderWolves) and a CSU Pueblo loss.

On Sunday, Kylie Bach had five saves as MSU Denver posted its eighth shutout of the season. It was Bach's sixth individual shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. The Roadrunners now have 28 shutouts in the 55 games since Mertz became head coach.

MSU Denver had a slight advantage in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (5-3), while both teams put five shots on goal.

"Our team played hard," Mertz said. "We talked about Sunday soccer, being on the road, and how Fort Lewis is really good at home. We wanted to be gritty and compete, and I thought that as a team we played good soccer.

"(Center backs) Maddy (Rueter) and Emily (Sirois) played well. We just need to create more chances."

Fort Lewis is now 8-3-6 overall and 4-3-4 for 16 points in league play.

MSU Denver plays Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
