Espinoza’s Game-High 17 Points Leads Roadrunners To Win

DENVER – The MSU Denver Women's Basketball Team earned its first win of the season after defeating Seattle Pacific on 64-62 on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners had their best offensive performance of the season with four players scoring in double figures and shooting over 48 percent as a team.  Mikylah Espinoza led all scorers with 17 points while Brianna Sealy added 13 points.  Mariana Silva Pereira and Ashlyn Yow each scored 10 points.

The game was close throughout.  The Roadrunners jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after an Espinoza layup.  Seattle Pacific responded with an 11-2 run and then held a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with MSU Denver scoring 8 of the first 10 points.  Once again Seattle Pacific came back and the Falcons would take a 31-27 lead into the half.

Seattle Pacific would hold the lead throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter.  With 1:21 left in the game, Sealy hit two free throws to take a one-point lead.  After Seattle Pacific missed a go-ahead layup, Darla Hernandez would sink a jumper to push the lead to three.  A missed three-pointer by Seattle Pacific followed by a Silva Pereira free throw gave the Roadrunners a four-point lead.  The Falcons would hit a three-point basket with four seconds left and then foul Brooklyn Jones.  Jones hit the first free throw and miss the second.  Seattle Pacific would take a desperation shot at the buzzer but it was off target and the Roadrunners would come away with a 64-62 victory.

MSU Denver's defense was clutch in the fourth quarter holding Seattle Pacific to 35.3 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from three-point range.

The Roadrunners will open up their conference schedule on Friday, December 1 when they will face Westminster at 5 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
