RAPID CITY, S.D. – Kendra Parra scored 21 points and
Tosjanae Bonds reprised her role as an all-over-the-court menace Friday night as the MSU Denver women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 72-58 victory at South Dakota Mines.
Parra, the RMAC scoring leader whose school-record tying consecutive made free throw streak ended at 37 when she missed her first attempt, nonetheless made 9 of 11 free throws while adding 5 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.
Bonds' impact can't be defined by numbers alone, but she had 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and five steals.
"Kendra was really efficient offensively," MSU Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "And Tos, week by week, you can see it in practice that she's getting back to her old self."
MSU Denver (11-10 overall, 9-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) built a 33-21 halftime lead and kept the Hardrockers at bay in the second half.
In a game where it didn't shoot particularly well from the field (44.4 percent), from 3 (4 of 17, 23.5 percent) or the free throw line (20 of 32, 62.5 percent), MSU Denver forced South Dakota Mines into 18 turnovers – converting those into 23 points – and, most importantly, kept the Hardrockers' offensive rebounding in check.
After giving up 23 offensive rebounds in a narrow 60-59 win in Denver on Dec. 10, MSU Denver allowed just six Friday – its third-best performance of the season in that category.
"We made the adjustment," Haave said.
Jaiden Galloway scored 10 points and played excellent defense on Piper Bauer, South Dakota Mines' leading scorer who was held to nine points on 3 of 14 shooting.
"I felt like we really had a good gameplan defensively with some of their personnel and we followed it really well," Haave said. "Jaiden in particularly was very good."
Miza Gilberto had nine points and seven rebounds, and
Mariana Silva Pereira returned from a 10-game absence to provide a second-half lift with six points.
"It was great to have Mariana back on the floor," Haave said. "She ran the floor really well, and she got to the basket a couple of times. It's nice to have another ballhandler back."
MSU Denver, which has won seven of its last nine games, stays in South Dakota for a 4 p.m. game Saturday against Black Hills State (16-4, 11-3).
"It's a tough place to play and a tough place to win, and being able to do that tonight was really big for our team," Haave said. "Everyone contributed."
