Title IX Series: Sturges Starred in Volleyball

Outside hitter topped 1,000 in both kills and digs

DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.

Today is the 34th installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver.

Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.

Today, volleyball star Santaisha Sturges is featured.

Sturges starred for MSU Denver from 2015 through 2018 and was named AVCA All-America second team in 2017 and honorable mention in 2018, and was a two-time All-South Central Region and two-time All-RMAC first team selection.

She finished her career with 1,185 kills and 1,161 digs, just outside of program's all-time top 10 in both categories, and was the sixth player in program history to have at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

She finished her career seventh in MSU Denver history in career attack attempts (3,470) and 10th in service attempts (1,359), and also finished her career 12th in kills and reception percentage (.959), 13th in attack percentage (.224), 13th in digs, 15th in points (1,314) and 16th in kills per set (3.19).

During her career, she led the Roadrunners to an overall record of 90-36, including 63-9 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, and to four NCAA Division II national tournaments.

Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
