DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.
Today is the 40th installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver. The series coincides with the passage of Title IX.
Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.
Today, tennis star Jasmon Crabb is featured.
Crabb helped lead MSU Denver to its only women's tennis Division II Final Four appearance in 2003 as well as to its first two NCAA Tournaments.
After she was the RMAC Freshman of the Year as well as the RMAC Player of the Year for the 2001-02 season, Crabb won an ITA Regional championship in both singles and doubles in the fall of 2002, one of just three players in program history to have ever won the regional singles title.
Crabb earned All-RMAC first team honors in singles and doubles in 2002 as well as in doubles in 2003. She was ranked as high as No. 18 nationally in 2002 and peaked at No. 16 in 2003. In doubles, she and partner Hande Gorur were ranked No. 25 in 2002 and peaked at No. 9 the following season.
She posted the highest singles winning percentage (.925) in program history while going 37-3, and has the fourth-best doubles winning percentage at .837 (41-8). Despite playing only two seasons, she's tied for third in program history in No. 1 singles wins – she was 29-3 for the best No. 1 singles winning percentage at .906. Until 2018, she and Gorur were tied for the most No. 1 doubles wins in program history and, at 41-8 , they have the second-best No. 1 doubles winning percentage of .837.
She was 19-1 in singles in 2003 for the best single-season win percentage in program history at .950, while her mark of 18-2 (.900) is tied for third all-time. She and Gorur hold the program's single-season doubles wins record – their 24-4 mark is fifth-best all-time percentage (.857). Her two No. 1 singles percentages (11-1 for .917 in 2003, 18-2 for .900 in 2002) are the best in program history.
Crabb played for Roadrunners teams that were a combined 43-7, including 12-0 for two regular-season RMAC championships as well as two RMAC Tournament titles.
Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
