@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Put Up Strong Fight in Loss to No. 22 Hawaii Pacific

All three doubles matches went behind six games

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After a furious doubles point in which unheralded MSU Denver pushed top-seeded and nationally-ranked Hawaii Pacific to the limit, the Roadrunners eventually suffered a 4-0 defeat Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Pacific West Conference Tournament.

All three doubles matches went beyond six games.

At No. 1, the Roadrunners' 38th-ranked pairing of Isabel Heras and Kinsey Fields was tied 5-5 against the fifth-ranked duo of Shaline Pipa and Marleen Tilger before the Sharks' team pulled away 7-5. At No. 2, Hawaii Pacific's Elodie Busson didn't play with her usual partner as part of the 13th-ranked team in the country, but paired with Abigail Wild and they survived against MSU Denver's Hanna Haber and Marie Cool, 7-6 (3). At No. 3, Lilly Stienemeier and Kayla Myburgh of MSU Denver were 7-5 winners.

"We played probably our best doubles point of the season, and it was good to see," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "But we just came up short."

Hawaii Pacific has three nationally-ranked singles players in Busson (No. 4), Pipa (No. 27) and Tilgner (No. 51). Pipa won at No. 1 and Tilgner at No. 3, while Wild won at No. 4.

"In singles we were outplayed by a better team," Graetz said.

MSU Denver drops into the consolation bracket with a chance to finish as high as fifth place. The Roadrunners face No. 12 Stanislaus State (Calif.) in a 10 a.m. MDT (9 a.m. Arizona time) match on Friday.
